This is a statue of the Greek god Dionysus. The history of the Greek theatre began with festivals honoring their gods. Men would perform songs and plays to welcome Dionysus and the other gods.

Greek God Dionysus |   Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele. Dionysus, also called Bacchus (from bacca, berry), was the god of wine, and the personification of the blessings of Nature in general.  The worship of this divinity, which is supposed to have been introduced into Greece from Asia (in all probability from India), first took root in Thrace, whence it gradually spread into other parts of Greece.

Dionysus son of Zeus and mortal women Semele. God of fertility and wine, later patron of arts. One hand bringing joy and divine ecstasy. On the other brutal, unthinking rage. Thus, reflecting both sides of wine natures.
