Tapestry Weaving and Knitted Flowers

So much to learn and so little time....I've been piddling around with freestyle tapestry weaving for over a year and now it's time to get serious with it. From looking at the picture, you would think I was working with 10-12 balls of yarn, actually thanks to Noro slow progressive gradient skeins, I'm working with about 4 balls. So far, this is progressing nicely but far far away from the finished idea. This work in progress will be the only photo I show until the unveiling. Presently, I have…

Journal Quilts and More Ferns

The first of my journal quilts this year is inspired by memories of a very difficult period of my life: my husband died eleven years ago and during the first two years after his death I experienced financial hardship, problems with the house which needed repairs I couldn't afford and depression. I also neglected friendships and became rather hermit-like. If the piece above, which I have called Dark, looks grim, it is because it is meant to. I've also deliberately used coarse fabrics…

CD Weaving Tutorial

Finally! I've been trying to do a video tutorial on how to weave on a CD, but I've had technical problems. So photos will just have to do! Thank you to everyone who has expressed interest in my weaving idea, and I'm so happy to hear some of you have already made these with your kids or students. Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll really try to get back to you! Here's what you'll need:(Old CDs, scrap yarn, scissors, and if you want to make the flexible needles, plastic lids, and…

J Meetze Studio/Common Threads: Finished Tapestry, Riverside

Finished Tapestry, Riverside

The tapestry landscape is finished, well the weaving is done but I have some details in the finishing. It measures 5 1/4 inches by 7 7/8 inches on the loom, set at 10 ends per inch with wefts of wool ,cotton, silk, linen, rayon and metallic threads. It was woven on the Little Guy Mirrix Loom and has a mixture of handspun and commercial yarns. The cartoon was painted on the Brushes painting App for iPad. There is an earlier post on Brushes if you missed it.

PHILLIP STEARNS These textiles are a collection of woven and knit wall hangings and blankets whose patterns are generated using images taken with short circuited cameras. These blankets are layered with irony: a digital photographic image, made with an intentionally broken (rewired) camera, is mechanically woven or knit into a photoblanket.
