"Tire Saver" or "Thorn Catcher"

Here is the racer Robert Tanneveau riding with an early tire saver mounted from his rear brake bolt. Those clever little gadgets had been around far longer than I would have guessed... this photo dates from May, 1936! [A larger image of this photo was kindly scanned and copied to the internet by cycling enthusiast Aldo Ross, from one of his old French cycling magazines, "L'Intran Match" No.513, 12 May 1936.]
