Some of the 'villagers' outside the blacksmiths forge at Little Woodham Living History Village

Begun in 1984, Little Woodham is a fascinating re-creation of how an English village could have looked in 1642. The village, beautifully situated in an ancient oakwood, consists of more than a dozen structures ranging from a fisherman's shelter to an Ale House, Blacksmith's forge and an Apothecaries shop. On open days it is staffed by volunteers in period costume who can be seen tending the herbs and vegetables in the cottage gardens and practising a wide variety of period crafts. Around…

Brown Fitted Gown (v3.0) "1559 Doesburch Portrait"

*** Here is the second of my Mix n' Match posts featuring the re-styling of my brown fitted gown. While I've incorporated several reoccurring elements and accessories from similar images, it's primarily an homage to the 1559 Doesburch family portrait. I really love how this one turned out! While I liked the colour palette of my original gown ensemble, I find I'm really enjoying my attempts at reproducing period images and much prefer the final results (and I think this might be my most…

Tudor Clothes - The Anne Boleyn Files

The following article is written by Bess Chilver, costumer and Tudor dress expert. Women’s Dress at the Court of King Henry VIII It is without doubt, that the clothing for noble men and women in the reign of King Henry VIII were exquisite. Portraits show a woman’s silhouette is conical in shape whereas the men’s […]

Blue Trevelyon Gown

*** I'm not exactly sure what this garment is meant to be... A gown? A kirtle? The inspiration came from the Trevelyon Miscellany of 1608, a collection of images appropriated and later redrawn and coloured by Thomas Trevelyon. I fell in love with this image immediately. It appears to be a single front lacing layer worn over an exposed smock, paired with an apron and a linen partlet with attached or integral ruff. Now, it's never a good idea to take coloured drawings at face value and it's…

17th Century Middling Outfit

I got to go "play" at Henricus yesterday for work. It was awesome! I'm so addicted to the early 17th century... I'll be doing a separate post about my pair of bodies and smock once I get good pictures taken. Those pieces, and the coif, were entirely hand sewn. The actual doublet and petticoat are not, because I made them at work, on work time, for eventual inclusion in our inventory. Thus they are a mix of machine sewing (where you can't see) and hand sewing (where you can, like all the…

From her earliest days teaching at Hammersmith Day School and Royal Holloway College, she knew that the students …
