Catalina de Erauso (1585-1650) was a Basque novice nun who ran away from her convent at about 15 years of age to travel to the New World. This "Lieutenant Nun" as she came to be known, wrote a sensational memoir about her adventures.

She fougth as a Spanish soldier in the New World, without anybody suspecting she was a woman (her male name was “Francisco de Loyola”). She was raised in a nunnery and was severely displeased with the life style. At the age of fifteen, she was beaten as a punishment, something that ended up being the final straw for Catalina. She escaped the convent, cut her hair and put on men’s clothing. She was ready to make her own adventure in the world.
