This shield was collected by John Atherton (1837-1913), after whom the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland are named. The shield, c. 1905, was made by the Rainforest peoples for young initiates. The designs come from natural animal and plant forms. This shield is similar to one in the Australian Museum in Sydney, which comes from people living near the Tinaroo Lake, a man-made reservoir on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, Australia
