Collaboration is alive and well in the revival of Arts and Crafts. This installation for a client in Santa Rosa was conceived by Debey Zito, who designed and built the fireplace woodwork, the light fixture, and the chair (with a copper falcon inlaid in the side panel). Her partner Terry Schmitt did the carving.

Certain motifs repeat in the decorative arts movement and its revival. These may be ancient, like the Celtic knot, or simply pretty and easy to stylize, like the iris. Most of the motifs come to us from nature and moderation and balance is key when decorating.

This house is a beautiful example of the Arts and Crafts style, almost a hundred years old with lots of warm woodwork and traditional paint colours. I painted the view surrounding the house as I imagined it before settlement.

The Arts and Crafts Movement/Arts & Crafts Period were not only popular decorating styles in the late 1800s/early 1900s but also a philosophical movement, a reaction to mass production & frilly Victorian Era decor. The Arts & Crafts Movement promoted simple, hand crafted functional art. Designers & architects such as Gustav Stickley, Dard Hunter of the the Roycrofters, and Frank Lloyd Wright developed their own unique style during the Arts and Crafts Movement. Enjoy my board!
