NASA's Hubble telescope finds Pluto's fifth moon

Almost exactly one year after discovering dwarf planet Pluto's fourth moon -- though not before actually naming poor little P4 -- NASA announced Wednesday a fifth moon has been discovered orbiting the ex-planet.

Hubble Unmasks Ghost Galaxies: "Astronomers have used the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to study some of the smallest and faintest galaxies in our cosmic neighbourhood. These galaxies are fossils of the early Universe: they have barely changed for 13 billion years. The discovery could help explain the so-called “missing satellite” problem, where only a handful of satellite galaxies have been found around the Milky Way, against the thousands that are predicted by theories." The atom casts its shadow

With all this talk about the Higgs boson's possible discovery this week, it's refreshing to also have news about a component of the universe we are intimately familiar with: the atom. Atoms are the building blocks of everything you see around you.

Hubble spots rare gravitational arc from distant, hefty galaxy cluster

An analysis of the surprising arc revealed that the lensed object is a star-forming galaxy that existed 10 to 13 billion years ago.

Pluto at opposition

Pluto at opposition: "Dwarf planet Pluto comes to opposition on 29 June among the stars of Sagittarius and despite its +14 magnitude and current southerly declination it is a good target for imagers and owners of moderate to large telescopes. Of course it is far too small and distant to reveal a disc in amateur instruments, but keen observers can try to follow Pluto's movement against the background star field."
