The park comprises two small ice fields, with glaciers of up to 7 mi long. The largest glaciated area is Queulat ice cap, which encompasses about 31 sq mi and contains park's centerpiece, the Queulat Hanging Glacier.
The Chacabuco Valley, the heart of the future Patagonia National Park, is like many places in Patagonia: remote. It’s a roughly five-hour drive from the Balmaceda airport, and at least a day by bus. But there are oh so many reasons to make the trek.
