El puente que vemos actualmente es una reconstrucción del original, cuya construcción date posiblemente de los siglos XIV o XV, con reformas posteriores. En 11 de enero de 1809 el puente fue dinamitado por las tropas inglesas de John More que defendían A Coruña de sus perseguidores e invasores franceses. En esta situación de ruína estuvo hasta casi el siglo XXI, donde fue totalmente reconstruído.
