Iconic Hollywood sign used to say “Hollywoodland”. The sign was first erected in 1923 and originally read “HOLLYWOODLAND”. Its purpose was to advertise the name of a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles….

The last buildings of old Chinatown are seen in June 1949 at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and North Los Angeles Street. The buildings were torn down to make way for the Hollywood Freeway and Civic Center projects.
