Kōgyoku-tennō, also known as Empress Saimei (斉明天皇? Saimei-tennō), was the and monarch of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.

Senri 1922. Empress Komyo (701–760) was the Nara period consort of Japanese Emperor Shomu (701–756). She married Emperor Shomu at the age of 16, and gave birth to the princess Abe at the age of 18. She gave birth to her first prince at the age of 27. Unfortunately, he died soon after birth. The Fujiwara clan insisted that Prince Nagaya had killed the prince by the curse. She became an empress at the age of 29; and she was the first to be raised to the rank of kogo in historical times.

Statue of Hata no Kawakatsu at Koryu-ji, together with his wife~The sixth-century Hata no Kawakatsu was one of the key figures of his time.  He was an influentialally of the devout Buddhist Prince Shōtoku, credited with the spread of the new religion in Japan. As a member of the immigrant Hata, Kawakatsu too was receptive to Buddhism and founded Koryu-ji, the first temple to be built in the Kyoto basin.  He is also said to have introduced Shinto-style kagura dance/plays into Japan.
