Oscar Wilde (1854-00), Irish author, playwright and poet most known for his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray and for his arrest. After accusing the Marquess of Queensbury of libel, a trial ensued--the Marquess offered male prostitutes to testify they had had sex with Wilde. Wilde dropped the charges, was arrested for sodomy. He was convicted and imprisoned where he had a spiritual awakening, was finally released and baptized into the Catholic church before his death from meningitis.
