Jack Beard's at The Rosemary Branch - Rosemary Branch Pub Sign 44 Lewisham Way…

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans claims to be the oldest pub in Britain. In a time when few could read, pub signs advertised the entertainment on offer inside. Cock fighting was one of many blood sports carried on at pubs and involved 2 specially trained roosters fighting in a pit whilst spectators bet heavily. One purse in 1830 is said to have been worth £370,000 today. The circular shape of this pub made it the perfect venue. For more details see http://completetext.com/ebookspubs.html
