"During the Middle Ages, copper mantle clasps with enameled decoration and gemstones were primarily made for church garments. This clasp is decorated with the Annunciation scene, showing the Virgin and Gabriel surrounded by six dragons. This piece surely belonged to an ecclesiastical vestment." -Walters Museum

Agraffe (clasp) used to fasten a cloak or mantel. This exceptional example is in perfect condition. The birds in translucent enamel closely correspond to enamels created about 1300, that are now in the cathedral treasury of Cologne and that inspired the Cologne goldsmith Gabriel Hermeling.
