The figures are abstracted from the so-called "messengers" flanking a "crying" god sculpture on a gate in Tiahuanaco, Bolivia. The figures on the gate were repeated again and again in varying abstractions, In some they become simply code-like --the eye with its "tear," the feet, mouth, headdress, bent x-ray-like legs, and staff.
