"Global warming is when the Earth's natural temperature goes up over time." This is my 10-year old daughter's definition of what's happening to our planet. When I explained the greenhouse effect and global warming in more detail, she told me that people should stop producing so much smoke and pollution. She said this so matter-of-factly that I was instantly reminded just how innocent children are when it comes to topics that are considered “controversial” by adults.

In 2005, Richard Louv wrote a ground-breaking book entitled, Last Child in the Woods, which introduced what he referred to as “Nature Deficit Disorder.” The book addressed the decreased exposure of children to nature, and how this new disorder is affecting society and the future of our offspring. It was the modern beginning of a revolution to challenge the status quo and get back to nature.

Yes, nature journaling is still a thing...it's just that with today's technology, we're doing it a bit differently than we did in the past. Not only does it help you discover the world around you, but journaling is often suggested by therapists to help reduce anxiety and encourage mindfulness. #naturejournaling #naturejournal #treehugginmom

When I was a park naturalist, nature journaling was seriously old-school. We used paper and pencils in those days, and a nature journal was exactly that…a journal that described your experiences in nature through art, poetry, and observation. Today, there are other, more tech-based ways to create a nature journal that will appeal to all ages. #naturejournaling #mynaturejournal #treehugginmom
