Considered a federally threatened species, it resembles the American alligator but has lighter skin & a narrower, triangular-shaped snout. They are salt water tolerant. There are only about 2,000 adult crocodiles in the mainland United States, living exclusively in a narrow range along the coastlines of central & southern Florida. They can also be found in some coastal areas of Caribbean islands, Mexico & South America. Usually less aggressive than the American alligator, considered a shy & reclusive species. The relationship between cricket chirping & temperature has long been noted. In Western science, it is called Dolbear’s law after publishing in 1897 by Amos Dolbear : number of cricket chirps in 15 seconds + 40 = Temperature (F). However, different cricket species may work best with a different formula for temperature, or could be more or less accurate than another species. Dolbear didn't identify what species of cricket his formula referenced. Other factors like how close the crickets are to a warm building or what region you live in can also impact the formula. The last time Brood XIX & Brood XIII emerged together was in 1803, so this dual emergence is an extremely rare, once-in-a-lifetime event. Brood XIII, the Northern Illinois Brood, contains 3 different species of cicadas & emerges every 17 years. The Great Southern Brood, Brood XIX, contains 4 different species of cicadas on a 13-year cycle. The singing will start in late April & continue through mid-June from Virginia into Mississippi in the south, & from Illinois across to Michigan in the north.
